Provisions
A central part of our learning curriculum at Cardiff West CHS exists within our provisions block, our very own 'school within a school'.
We recognise that a mainstream education is, for some pupils, a significant challenge. This challenge may be for a short period of time or on a longer-term basis. Where a child is presenting with significant issues over a period of time, the school will work with parents regarding whether a change of provision is appropriate in order to prevent possible permanent exclusion from education.
Our Provisions
At our school, we understand that every child is unique — and sometimes, traditional classroom settings aren’t the best fit for every learner. That’s why we offer a range of tailored provisions designed to support pupils with emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs. Here’s an overview of what we provide:
Ladder (Yr7-8) and Platform (Years 9-11) BESD Support
For pupils with behaviour that is emotionally dysregulated, our Ladder and Platform provisions offer a nurturing, structured environment. We deliver an alternative curriculum focused on GCSE-linked interventions, helping pupils re-engage with learning while developing emotional regulation and social skills. These classes have a maximum class size of 12 per group.
Nurture - Anxiety Support within School (All years)
Our Nurture provision supports pupils who experience anxiety and find movement around school challenging. We provide a calm, safe space where pupils can build confidence, manage transitions, and access learning at a pace that suits them.
Outreach – Off-site support for severe anxiety (Years 9-11)
For pupils with extreme anxiety who are unable to attend school, our Outreach team offers off-site education and emotional support. This provision focusses on rebuilding confidence and preparing pupils for a gradual transition back into school life.
Online – Blended Learning for Home-Based Pupils
Our newest provision, Online, is designed for pupils who cannot currently leave the home setting.
We offer a blended model of education, combining online learning with school-based support to help pupils build resilience and independence.
Accelerate - Years 7 and 8
We also operate a number of 'Accelerate' classes in years 7 and 8 in which the curriculum is modelled to be literacy and numeracy rich to ensure pupils make maximum progress before their GCSE and options years. The class size in these groups is kept to around 20.
All of our provisions classes have bespoke teaching assistants support either in the lessons or as interventions.
Each provision is designed with care, compassion, and a commitment to helping pupils thrive. We work closely with families to ensure every child receives the support they need to succeed — academically, socially, and emotionally.
